Most horror fans dislike theatrical releases. I don’t mean the everyday horror fan. I’m talking about the dedicated horror fan that is constantly searching for that obscure or little known S.O.V. or underground horror flick. I enjoy those flicks and the thrill of the hunt is what I am driven to with collecting horror but I sometimes like to break away from the shoestring budgets and recharge my batteries with a theatrical release. Sure, they lack originality but I really enjoy the basic stories and cinematography.
A few weeks ago I was sent the horror thriller I Still See You on blu to review. From my understanding this is a film that was adapted from the book. I had never heard of it before but I was curious after checking out the trailer. I’m glad I did because I really enjoyed it.
**Spoiler Alert**The film follows a high school student Ronnie (Thorne) who is living in a world where the “memories” of loved ones live on after an explosion from an experimental piece of equipment killed thousands in Chicago including her father. She finds a new ghost in her bathroom warning her to run. She starts investigating who he is with a student in her school who is obsessed with the ghosts. They suspect he is a killer who is now hunting her but soon discovers that he is warning her about her impending death at the hands of someone she trusts.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect from this one but I was very surprised by how much I liked it. I liked several aspects of the film but it did have several issues that prevented me from loving it.
The acting in this one is solid. Bella Thorne didn’t sell me on her character. He blank faced stare throughout every scene was far from convincing. However, Richard Harmon and Dermot Mulroney were both fantastic. They got into every scene and made their characters really stand out.
The story for this one is fun for a popcorn thriller but there was a few holes in the story. These holes are big enough to drive a semi through but if you just give the film a chance you can enjoy the world that it establishes. It is a supernatural murder mystery but I still enjoyed it for what it is.
Finally, This film does have some solid visual effects but for those looking for blood and gore will not find it here. I enjoyed the visuals that were given and one scene in particular was really cool to watch. Overall, I Still See You is a fun watch that I could pair easily with Warm Bodies. Both are light hearted horror flicks that are not for everyone. Personally, I sometimes need a break from the blood and guts and films like this are great to check out before returning to the gritty world of no-budget horror flicks.
