Breaking: ‘Sleepaway Camp’ Actor Jonathan Tiersten Has Passed Away

The world of independent horror is in shock today as we’ve learned of the passing of fan favorite actor Jonathan Tiersten. He was most known for his role as Ricky in the cult classic slasher Sleepaway Camp (1983) and its most recent sequel Return to Sleepaway Camp (2008).

Sources are reporting that his untimely death has been confirmed by his brother, who has stated that Tiersten passed away in his home in New Jersey late last week. Investigators are actively trying to determine cause of death. He was just 60 years old at the time of death.

After his success in Return to Sleepaway Camp, Jonathan Tiersten would go on to co-star in at least twelve other independent horror films – becoming an absolutely fixture in the community. His last film, Open House, is currently in post-production and also stars scream queen Devanny Pinn.

For what it’s worth, I never met Tiersten in person, but I know he was very generous with his time when it came to interacting with fans. He was a popular actor who truly enjoyed interacting with the people who he brought joy via cinema. During our few minor interactions, he always had a certain light that was unavoidable.

HorrorSociety sends our condolences to his family, friends and fans.

RIP Jonathan Tiersten
