Just a friendly reminder, and I do believe that this falls into the horror category in some way. The Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 8 Part 1 DVD is available online and in select stores. “Buffy Season 8?” you may ask. Yup! Way back in May of 2003, Buffy hung up her stake after activating all the potential slayers in the world and smacking down The First Evil and its seemingly endless amount of disposable minions. All was quiet for a few years, rumors of spin off shows and TV movies were rampant, but nothing ever came to fruitation. It wasn’t until March of 2007 that Buffy came back from the dead…again…this time in the form of comics.
Yes, Buffy came back in the form of comics. Season 8 ended last month, but consisted of 40 episodes – one episode/comic released each month. Season 8 follows Buffy and the other Scoobies as they deal with the world they have created and the powerful forces who wish to bring it crashing down. Before you blow this off as some fan creation – it’s not. It is completely legit. This has been confirmed by Joss Whedon as what would have happened on TV had Buffy continued on for another season. (btw: it almost did.) Joss Whedon was in charge of concept, story ideas, some script writing, and was pretty much in charge of everything except the actual animation. Writers from the show also pitched in to help out at times.
Towards the end of the season it was announced that Buffy Season 8 would be coming out as cartoons in the form of motion comics. Motion comics are pretty much animated comic book pages. They include spoken dialogue, music, sound effects, special effects, and yes – actual moment of characters. Episodes usually range between 12 – 14 minutes. Due to the time it takes to create these motion comics, only the first 19 episodes were compiled onto a 2 Disk set and released as a DVD.
While none of the original actors reprise their roles here, some of the voice actors (especially Faith, Giles, and Xander) sound VERY similar. Buffy and Willow are the only ones who are really off, sometimes. Diehard Buffy fans should go out and by this. It’s interesting to see how things would have progressed. If you’re not too enthusiastic or if you’re on the fence, click the link below to watch a clip of what the motion comics are like. Also, if you don’t want to go out and buy them in bulk – you can buy them on Itunes and Amazon.com for $0.99 per episode.
