Siren. What can I say about Siren? My lack of anything witty or interesting to say right off the bat should tell you my opinion of this supernatural thriller. I wouldn’t call it a horror film because it’s far from horrific, and not even the slightest bit scary. I mean, maybe it would be scary to younger children or…people without mainstream media. But, for the most part the movie read like a bizarre four-way with some random suspense and plot twists thrown in. So, let’s get into it…
Siren is about a young couple, Ken and Rachel, who go on a weekend trip on a small vessel to the open ocean with Rachel’s old friend, Marco. While the couple goes to have sex in the hull, Marco spots someone stranded on an island and drives the boat closer to shore in hopes of saving the stranger. The man is manic and crazed and he ends up dying mysteriously and suddenly, bleeding from the ears. To make matters worse, the boat ends up breaking, causing the group of three to head to the island to search for help. Once there, they discover an exotic woman, Silka, who is almost dumb and mute. They take her into the group, but quickly start to learn that Silka is hiding a secret, a deadly secret. Will they make it off the island alive? Probably not…
Ok, let’s start with my notes. Firstly, I found it quite humorous that the Ken, Rachel, and Marco put so much effort into burying the body of the stranger. They wanted to get rid of his body so they weren’t suspected of murder. They transported the body to the island, wrapped it up, and buried it a couple feet deep in the sand. Meanwhile, their boat is on the frickin’ ocean! I’d just kick his ass overboard! I also found it humorous that they took another stranger, Silka, on their boat. How well did befriending another stranger and taking them on your boat work for you last time? Hhhmmm….
Now that I said some funny things about Siren, here are things that I found odd. If you haven’t guessed already, Silka is a siren; the mythical creature from Greek folklore, a beautiful woman who sings sailors to their deaths. What they never told you in school is that the siren also has the ability to turn you into a lesbian…because that’s what Silka does to Rachel very easily, not that I’m complaining. Oh, yeah, and Rachel gets visions too. She even had one about Silka killing someone and decided the vision wasn’t cause for concern. Thank god Rachel’s never been in a Final Destination scenario.
I think the worst thing about Siren is that when it’s time for something scary to happen, it’s more annoying than scary. You wait the whole movie to see gore or something terrifying and I seriously almost fast forwarded through it. Very bad editing technique. Speaking of editing and production, the movie was made absolutely perfect. There is nothing I can criticize production-wise. Sadly, the script was the downfall for Siren. With a better script, Siren probably could have been a good film. But, as it stands right now, it would probably get a C- on a grading scale. Not even Anna Skellern (The Descent 2) could save this viewer from a terrible Siren.
