Thibul Nettle’s The Shadows of Trust Arrives in New Zealand Cinemas

Thibul Nettle’s fourth feature film arrives in select cinemas from 8 October, following international streaming success, but Australian theatrical support remains limited.

Australian psychological thriller The Shadows of Trust, written and directed by First Nations filmmaker Thibul Nettle, arrives in select Australian cinemas today, Thursday 8 October 2026, with additional screenings commencing in some locations from 15 October.

Distributed by Aboriginal-owned Wirra Distribution, the South Australian independent feature marks Nettle’s fourth feature film and, significantly, his first theatrical release.

Starring Sarah Jeavons (SAS Australia, Ruby Ruby), Georgia Williams (Ladies in Black) and Thibul Nettle (Roadkill), The Shadows of Trust explores the fragile boundaries between love, loyalty, obsession and betrayal.

The film follows Alex and Phoebe Clark, a seemingly happy couple whose idyllic life at a secluded country home begins to unravel when disturbing events expose long-buried secrets. The arrival of a mysterious neighbour threatens to destroy their relationship as paranoia grows and the truth becomes increasingly difficult to escape.

A proud Whadjuk and Bibbulman Noongar filmmaker, Nettle has built a career spanning acting, writing, directing and producing, establishing himself as an independent filmmaker willing to explore genres beyond the traditional expectations placed upon First Nations storytellers.

His previous feature film achieved considerable international success on streaming platforms, reaching Top 10 charts across multiple territories and streaming services, demonstrating a strong international appetite for his independent genre filmmaking.

Despite having already reached audiences around the world, The Shadows of Trust represents a significant milestone in Nettle’s career, becoming the first of his four feature films to receive a theatrical release.

The production reflects the determination and resourcefulness of Australia’s independent filmmaking community, where ambitious projects are frequently developed and produced without the financial backing available to major studio productions.

While The Shadows of Trust has received a more positive response from cinema exhibitors across Aotearoa New Zealand, securing theatrical screens in its home country has proven considerably more challenging.

New Zealand exhibitors, including Rialto, Takapuna, Mercury Twin Cinemas and Regent Cinemas, have embraced the film, supporting its theatrical rollout and providing opportunities for audiences to experience the Australian production on the big screen.

In contrast, Australian theatrical interest has largely been confined to regional cinemas along the country’s east coast, despite extensive outreach undertaken by Wirra Distribution.

The distributor has approached Australian cinema operators through multiple general industry communications, alongside individualised correspondence with many exhibitors. Despite these efforts, only a small number of Australian cinemas have committed to screening the film, with several chains waiting to see the box office results from the current exhibitors before making a commitment.

The contrasting response between Australian and New Zealand exhibitors raises broader questions about the accessibility of theatrical screens for independent Australian productions, particularly those operating outside established studio distribution networks.

For independent filmmakers, securing a theatrical release can represent years of work, significant personal investment and an important opportunity to connect directly with audiences. Yet access to screens remains one of the greatest barriers facing smaller Australian productions.

The Shadows of Trust represents the company’s continued efforts to build relationships with exhibitors across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, following its first theatrical release, Satu – Year of the Rabbit.

The distributor is encouraging Australian audiences to support the cinemas that have committed to screening The Shadows of Trust, while also inviting those without a local screening to express their interest.

With independent Australian films competing for attention against major international releases, audience support and direct requests to cinemas can play an important role in helping smaller productions reach the big screen.

The Shadows of Trust opens in select Australian cinemas from 8 October 2026, with additional locations screening from 15 October 2026.
