Night of the Pumpkin (Review)

From the guys who gave you Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet

Night of the Pumpkin is a short film by Sideshow Pictures. The film was created in 2011, but was distributed to investors by the Kickstarter page recently.

In Night of the Pumpkin, a demonically possessed pumpkin goes on a rampage, eating everyone in sight. As its hunger grows, so does its size. It’s up to two teens to save the day as they battle the wicked pumpkin.

Pumpkin is fronted by Samantha Hahn (Blood Night), Matt Watson, Steve Arons, and Damian Maffei. Frank Sabatella serves as director and Ted Geoghegan serves as writer.

So, what did I think of Night of The Pumpkin? Well, being that it is a short film (under 20 minutes) some scenes are kind of rushed. The picture quality is a little dim or bright at times, but that’s really the only bad quality. The story is really fun and is a nice throwback to the 80s horror films. The script is hilarious with my favorite lines being: “What did you do to his dick?” and “Where did you get a rocket launcher and a hummer?” The gore factor is pretty impressive, lots of blood and guts. And surprisingly not a lot of CGI! You would think with a movie about a killer pumpkin there would be a lot of CGI, but there’s really only one scene where the pumpkin is computer generated. The whole demonic pumpkin plot is kind of open-ended so I’m hoping we’ll see a feature-length Pumpkin sometime in the future.

I have no idea what the plans are in terms of further distribution, but I do know the film is available for viewing on Fangoria.com. I won’t post a link to one of our competitors, but you should check it out if you get the chance.
