“I didn’t think that was blood that I was standing in!” Chantelle Albers. On March, 24th the Axeman at Cutter’s Creek will invade Ciniciniti, Ohio and unleash a fury of bloody goodness upon Horrorhound Weekend, as the Axeman team unviels selected scenes for the film. Director, writer and co-star of the film Joston Theney will be on hand along with indie scream queen Elissa Dowling. I know we’re all dying to see what he as in store for us.
But in the mean time to quench our bloody thirst, I have another interview with a member of the cast gore-lious Chantelle Albers who plays Cassidy arch rival of Stacy (Elissa Dowling) in the film. Enjoy!
Horror Society: Now that the blood is spilled on the floor, and the experience is over, what are some of your scariest memories from being on set of the AxeMan at Cutter’s Creek?
Chantelle Albers: Well just to name a few….I was coming downstairs of the cabin and heard screaming from like 3 different people and everyone was freaking out because a bat flew inside. I get downstairs and see Elissa in her underwear on top of a car clapping her hands to try and catch it!
Another scary moment was caught on camera by Jamie, and it’s of Scott wearing a high ponytail doing a Valley Girl accent and running around like the Axeman. Most of the time on set was full of really good energy and laughter. I’ve never had a bond quite like this on set before.
HS: Now an easy question, what is your all-time favorite horror film growing up?
CA: The Exorcist or The Shining
HS: What do you think makes a great horror film – atmosphere vs. blood and gore?
CA: I think atmosphere. When I was growing up I watched horror films all the time and I loved almost everything from Scream to Amityville to Beetlejuice. What really gets me though is paranormal or supernatural horror because it has an atmosphere that is unknown, things can happen that are out of this world. Things you can’t see can hurt you and take hold of you mentally not just physically. We don’t have hard evidence against supernatural happenings so much of it is unknown which I think makes it scarier.
HS: You play the role of Cassidy in the film, what can you tell us about your character and how much trouble does she get herself into?
CA: Cassidy is a track star so she’s very competitive by nature and is used to winning. It really strikes a cord in her to see Stacy be with her former long term boyfriend. Cassidy’s feisty and a fighter but has a side to her that’s very genuine and real. She gets into trouble because of her genuine side.
HS: A lot of time on indie sets everyone becomes a really tight family, did this happen on Axeman at Cutter’s Creek and how hard was it to say goodbye once the film was wrapped?
CA: I can’t tell you how much fun it was on set. Joston is a good friend of mine so I knew the energy would be very chill and pleasant. I’ve made some of the best friends on this project. We really did all become like a family. We created this strong ensemble of actors, the chemistry between everyone was great. Saying goodbye wasn’t that tough because most of us live in LA or near by and we still hang out on a regular basis.
HS: The Axeman at Cutter Creek promises to be a 80s throwback to slasher films that we all love! What was it that attracted you to this project?
CA: When I read the script what attracted me to it was the relationships between the characters. Within our group of 9 there are individual relationships and problems which give the script sub plots and depth as an actor. I always like working with a script like this because there are other elements and obstacles for you to get around. The killer is not the only obstacle. The audience gets to see the characters and get to know them through the subplots so when they die we care about them! Hahahaha! Plus going up into the woods with a bunch of people just sounds dangerous and fun!
HS: What can the fans expect from the Axeman at Cutter’s Creek? How scared will we be?
CA: It goes pretty far with the blood and guts. When I first read it I was like, WHOA! Did that just happen?? There suspense, and gore, and a hint of T&A. Classic!
HS: What was it like meeting Scot Pollard for the first time as the Axeman, did you guys meet prior to shooting, or was it just the day of shooting your first scenes with him?
CA: I didn’t meet him until we got on set a few days before I started shooting. When I first saw him I was told how tall he was so I was prepared to see a very large person. My head can just below his shoulder and his hands were twice my size.
HS: Follow up to that question, is what was that experience like?
CA: Scot is really a fun chill guy. He’s hilarious to be around, like a big teddy bear who loves to kill people. I think we all had a great time shooting til 6 in the morning with him to entertain us with his impersonations and trucker hat that said “tities” on it.
HS: What is it that you think fans love about this sub-genre of horror “slasher” films that keep us wanting more?
CA: I think it’s the mixture of humour and horror in these films that keep people coming back. There is a certain predictability in this genre that make it something people can rely on when they are choosing movies. There are elements to a slasher that you can expect and you choose them because you know what you’re getting. Kind of like a hostess twinkie- you know what to expect and you like it…until they take it away! There are the clichés, puns, classic moments, and memorable moments in slashers that act as a kind of formula for the story, and I think it’s the formula that keeps the fan base. There’s also room to push the envelope in slashers so you can continue the story and make a sequel or trilogy. This leaves audiences wanting more- nothing is ever really solved in slashers.
HS: You may not be able to tell us, but I’m going to ask: What was the one scene in the film that you were the most excited about filming or on the other hand not excited about filming?
CA: The running race between Cassidy and Stacy I was a little nervous about because it was so difficult running on the trails with the elevation change. I went running on one of the trails by the cabin and almost died because I was used to running on a treadmill and a lower elevation. I wanted my running to look like a pro since my character is a competitive runner.
HS:There’s an Axe-Wielding Maniac on the loose – do you A. (Run for your life) or B. (Try to put a stop to the man that is after you?)
CA: Definitely A.
If I did option B that would be like suicide for me since I know I physically have no chance against a 7 foot man.
HS: I’m a huge twitter fan, so I’ve got to ask are there any #awkwardmoments when your character realizes that she may or may not be standing In her own friends blood?
CA: I didn’t think that was blood that I was standing in!
HS: Okay now a serious questions, what was it like working with Joston Theney are there any funny moments you would like to share?
CA: Joston is dear friend of mine and we have worked together in the past, another reason why I was so excited to get on board for Axeman. He is a really great director and writer in that he works collaboratively making sure that you are satisfied with the work that you have done. He gives you freedom to “play” with your choices as the character and guides you in a united direction so that the movie has a strong united story and theme. He gives so much of himself in his writing and as a director onset. He’s a great leader making you as the actor feel comfortable and creating a safe environment for his actors to get dangerous.
HS: My last and final question, I promise – Is there anything that I forgot that you’re just dying to tell the readers about this film or about any upcoming projects that you’re apart of?
CA: I’m really excited for HorrorHound in Cincinnati March 21-25. We will be invading the convention and Axeman will be premiering scenes there. We’d love to see you there!
