KING KAUFMAN: THE PASSION OF LLOYD

Director Shauna Jaeger uses the term “shlockumentary” to describe this particular film, as its sole purpose is to glorify the gore-comedy filmmaking genius that is Lloyd Kaufman. The title couldn’t be any more fitting, as anyone who’s ever met Lloyd has been affected by his extreme passion for what he does. He’s inspired many a young filmmaker, and is always more than happy to help sow the seed of truly independent filmmaking by welcoming budding cinema protégés into his wild world.

An intimate interview with James Gunn (SLITHER) recognizes a prime example of “A Troma Success Story.” James came to Lloyd looking for general work and ended up writing the successful film TROMEO & JULIET, resulting in the noteworthy writing/directorial career that he is known for today. James expresses the importance which Lloyd’s influence has factored into his career, and calls THE TOXIC AVENGER “one of the first *true* gore-comedies ever made.”

Various other interviews include the bubbly, funny Jessica Dublin (“Mrs. Junko” in THE TOXIC AVENGER II & III), and “Arbie” & other cast/crew members of POULTRYGEIST: NIGHT OF THE CHICKEN DEAD. Point being, Lloyd has helped many get their careers jump-started by opening his doors to them, despite the lack of experience. Interviews with Lloyd recount a surprising list of A-list celeb names who had their first acting performance in a Troma movie! In fact, the true “passion of Lloyd” is also emphasized in the manner in which he chooses crew members – enthusiasm over experience. One can always gain expertise, but the passion for making your own damn movie must already come from within. Enthusiam cannot be taught.

Despite uneven sound quality and a rather short running time (45 min), this documentary was made by a fan and it’s always an entertaining ride when Mr. Kaufman is involved. 30 years later and TROMA’s independent studio still thrives. Let’s raise a glass of shlock and toast to 30 more!
