The upcoming Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Serenity) and Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) horror film, The Cabin in the Woods, has been pushed back from its original February 5, 2010 release date. The film, which stars Kristen Connolly and Chris Hemsworth, is now set to be released on January 1, 2011.
Why the drastic change? It’s going 3D. MGM reportedly told the horror website Shock Till You Drop, “[T]he reason… is because the early response to the film has been phenomenal and they’re going to spend six months or so converting the picture to 3-D.” The decision to push the release date back over a year has stirred up some criticism and a lot of questions.
The overall delay until February of 2011 is stirring up some controversy. Neil Miller of Film School Rejects wrote, “why not move it to October and release a scary movie in the vicinity of Halloween? Instead, they will open on the four-day weekend that ends with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.”
