Very interesting week, whether it be at the Box Office, DVD Top 30, or Nielson Ratings.
Let’s start with the bad! I think I jinxed things last week by saying that all the independent horror films could possibly keep shooting up the Box Office chart. Because…they didn’t. Evil Bong 3D fell off the chart completely, probably due to the limited release. Rubber and I Saw The Devil tumbled down the Box Office, but one more than the other.
Now on to the good stuff! Stake Land debuted on the chart this week at #73 with $10,000 in sales. Red Riding Hood and Black Swan were added back to the Box Office. Not really sure what happened there. Now on to Scream 4 and Insidious. Scream 4 may have taken a beating this week, but adding in its overseas gross of over $35,000,000, Scream 4 has actually made over $68,000,000 in two weeks. The other success story is Insidious, which some are saying could end up being the most profitable film of 2011. This is because Insidious was produced on a budget of only $1,500,000 and has made almost $46,000,000.
- 5 2 Scream 4 $9,312,000 (Total: $33,316,000)
- 9 7 Insidious $6,826,000 (Total: $45,860,000)
- 23 19 Sucker Punch $401,000 (Total: $36,005,000)
- 28 20 Battle: Los Angeles $277,000 (Total: $82,723,000)
- 30 41 I Am Number Four $270,000 (Total: $54,460,000)
- 32 32 Red Riding Hood $264,000 (Total: $37,262,000)
- 39 40 Beastly $132,000 (Total: $27,641,000)
- 73 Stake Land $10,000
- 76 55 Black Swan $8,000 (Total: $106,950,000)
- 81 69 Rubber $4,000 (Total: $53,000)
- 86 83 I Saw The Devil $3,000 (Total: $129,000)
Harry Potter KILLS the horror/scifi chart at the DVD Top 30…pretty badly. The new release of Deathly Hallows prompted a huge surge in Harry Potter sales, which knocked Narnia and Black Swan down a few spots – and even knocked The Walking Dead Season 1 completely off the chart!
- 1 Harry Potter/Hallows Part 1 $37,545,000
- 2 4 Narnia/Dawn Treader $9,224,000 (Total: $17,690,000)
- 7 5 Black Swan $1,805,000 (Total: $14,049,000)
- 16 Harry Potter/Stone $768,000 (Total: N/A)
- 24 Harry Potter/Prisoner $598,000 (Total: N/A)
- 27 Harry Potter/Phoenix $352,000 (Total: $221,463,000)
- 28 Harry Potter/Secrets $336,000 (Total: N/A)
- 29 Harry Potter/Goblet $273,000 (Total: $215,035,000)
Viewer-ship for horror/scifi related shows are down as a whole this week. Most shows are down by at least 200,000 viewers. Although, I think it’s interesting that one SyFy show fared much better than another in terms of rerun ratings.
- Vampire Diaries – 2,700,000
- Supernatural – 1,900,000
- Doctor Who – 1,300,000
- Ghost Hunters (repeat) – 1,136,000
- Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files – 1,134,000
- Stargate Universe – 1,092,000
- Destination Truth (repeat) – 581,000
