Horror Sales: Contagion, The Vampire Diaries & Paranormal Witness

Contagion is the top movie at the Box Office this week, and I’m counting it towards horror/scifi because I find a disease killing everyone to be pretty horrific. Shark Night 3D and Apollo 18 have flip flopped spots and are currently fighting to get close to $20mil. At this point, it’s safe to say Fright Night is a big flop. But, it appears last week was the final week Insidious was in theatres. It managed to rake in a little more than $54mil. Not bad for a little indie film made on a budget of not more than $1.5 mil.

1 Contagion $29,712,000

7 5 Shark Night 3D $4,244,000 (Total: $15,508,000)

9 3 Apollo 18 $3,700,000 (Total: $15,788,000)

11 8 Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark $2,825,000 (Total: $21,658,000)

16 12 Harry Potter/Hallows 2 $1,377,000 (Total: $377,480,000)

17 14 Cowboys & Aliens $1,085,000 (Total: $98,299,000)

21 17 Final Destination 5 $726,000 (Total: $41,927,000)

29 21 Fright Night $311,000 (Total: $17,946,000)

32 29 Transformers/Moon $237,000 (Total: $350,862,000)

36 34 Super 8 $190,000 (Total: $126,777,000)

37 38 Pirates/Tides $122,000 (Total: $240,949,000)

39 41 Attack The Block $81,000 (Total: $979,000)

41 42 X-Men: First Class $54,000 (Total: $146,372,000)

97 98 Trollhunter $1,000 (Total: $250,000)

Nothing new to see on the DVD Top 30 chart except the debut of The Vampire Diaries season two DVD. Honestly, a lot more people bought it than I had originally predicted.

3 The Vampire Diaries Season Two $4,786,000

5 3 Dexter Season Five $1,838,000 (Total: $14,588,000)

13 6 Priest $563,000 (Total: $5,571,000)

True Blood has about a million fans who I will call “fair viewer friends.” They’ll watch the show if there’s nothing better on, but jump ship if there’s something hipper to view. I think this explains why the number of viewers bounces around so much. The Vampires had a strong season three debut and The Secret Circle, CW’s new witch show, pulled in the same amount of viewers. Also, Death Valley continues to plummet…The chances of a season two are highly unlikely.

True Blood – 5,052,000

The Vampire Diaries – 2,999,000

The Secret Circle – 2,999,000

Eureka – 1,927,000

Haven – 1,909,000

Warehouse 13 – 1,908,000

Paranormal Witness – 1,632,000

Ghost Hunters – 1,557,000

Alphas – 1,510,000

Supernatural (rerun – 1,015,000

Death Valley – 953,000
