Nightmare on skelm street

By Chris Makhaye

From nowhere, amateur Durban actor Muzi “Vovo” Dube has become a celebrity in townships across South Africa.

He is the star of a film revolution they call Nandawood, a project started by the young people of Inanda township using mini video cameras and amateur actors to churn out popular Zulu-language horror movies.

These low-budget movies shot in the actors’ own homes have taken audiences by storm.

They are blood-thirsty by nature, featuring zombies on killing sprees, buckets of homemade blood (a mixture of juice, tomato sauce and paint) and animal entrails for gore.

People are hypnotised with crucifixes, and attacked by killer oranges. Axes, spears and guns all come into play, and there’s even a scene with a voodoo doll.
