Ink (2009) Review

Ink
By Sharon Foss

When we fall asleep at night…where do our minds go? Do you wake up from dreams that you try to describe to friends, family or spouse and just teeter off with, “It’s hard to explain”? Jamin Winans’ 2009 movie Ink attempts to explain how this can happen. How does your mind continue long after your consciousness is lost?

Ink presents us with an interesting view of the subconscious. What happens when you wake up from a nightmare? Is it the same feeling as when you wake up from a dream that brings you good fortune? Do you wonder what would have happened had you not woken up?

According to Ink, there are two “gangs.” It’s the battle of good versus evil when you drift off to la-la land. Those who comprise the good army bring you dreams of happiness. Winning the lotto, seeing a previously deceased loved one, having the ultimate happiness….But when the bad army comes around, and the good cannot defeat the bad…well…all bets are off.

And that is exactly what happens when little girl Emma https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2727304/ Quinn Hunchar is taken on a bad dream ride by a member of the bad army named Ink. The good dream army cannot defeat the force of evil that brings the haunting dreams to those getting some shut eye. That doesn’t mean Emma is gone forever, however. The good dream army let her slip right out of their hands as they fought Ink as hard as they could.

What happens in the real world while this goes on? Your body is still here for all to see, however, your mind is in a fight until the death. While Emma is lost in the dream world, her young body seizes and is comatose. Can her father save her? A father who hasn’t been in her life?

Ink is an interesting movie, from its concept to the direction, to the artistry of each scene. It’s good guys against bad guys, fighting to take you and your mind to places you cannot begin to imagine.
