The Lost Boys (1987)

After his brother, Michael, drinks blood and gets mixed up with a rough biker gang rumored to be a coven of vampires, Sam and his two vampire-hunter friends -armed with garlic and water pistols full of holy water – try to rid the town of evil.

The Lost Boys stars Jason Patric, Corey Haim,  Dianne Wiest,  Barnard Hughes,  Edward Hermann and Keifer Sutherland.

The opening music by G Tom Mac sets the right mode for this picture…mysterious, dark  and creepy.

The Lost Boys opens at a carnival where we see a group of guys harassing customers on a Merry-Go-Round. The security guard catches them and forces them to leave.  That night as the guard is leaving, we see something chasing him. He gets to his car before he and his car door are ripped away.

The following day we see a mother and her two sons driving along the highway with a moving van in tow – they are moving to Santa Carla. Again, we get a nice touch of music here with People Are Strange while we get to see some of the residents of  Santa Carla and a lot of missing children posters hanging up all over.

The family arrives at grandpa’s homestead and the two teenagers, Sam and Michael, are a little taken back by the surroundings as they playful dub it as a scene for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.  Grandpa is an odd duck and sets rules for everyone…no one is touch the second self of the refrigerator.

Later that night,  the family goes to the pier. Sam and Michael listen to some local musicians, Michael sees a beautiful girl while their mother, Lucy, walks down the pier.  She sees a help wanted sign hanging in a store window and a little lost boy crying outside the store. She takes him to inquire the whereabouts of his mother. Along the way, she meets the owner, Max, and is offered a job.

Sam goes to the local comic book shop where he meets the Frog brothers. They offer his several horror comics about vampires claiming that they are more like survival manuals than comics.

Michael finally meets Star and are leaving the pier when the local biker gang shows up and challenges Michael to a race. After almost plunging off a cliff, the group takes Michael to a collapsed hotel, the place that the bikers call home. David tempts Michael with rice and noodles that he makes appear as maggots and worms before offering him wine although Star tells him it’s blood. Not believing Star, Michael drinks the blood.

The next night when Lucy and grandpa are out on a date, Michael tries to attack Sam but Nanook defends him. Sam realizes that his brother has become a vampire and he calls Edgar and Allan Frog. Together the three must find a way to reverse the vampire effects on Michael and ultimately save all of Santa Carla.

The Lost Boys is another film I consider to be a cult classic. It is probably the first horror movie I noticed to have nothing but “beautiful” people playing the major roles (you gotta admit that saxophone player was hot!)

Corey Haim’s comedic timing and sarcastic wit brings the right amount of humor to this film. It’s obvious that Corey H. came to have fun. Corey Fieldman’s protrayal of  Edgar Frog is way over the top although it’s questionable whether Corey F. is in on the joke. And Keifer Sutherland plays the villain for all it’s worth and brings “the creep” factor into this horror movie.

I’ve seen this movie numerous times and it never gets old. And one more note, the soundtrack for The Lost Boys is fantastic, and I think it definitely adds to the movie.

I’m giving The Lost Boys 4 out 5 bloody stumps way up.
