Zombie Apocalypse

Ok, we get it. Ving Rhames is pretty bad ass and quite thorough at killing zombies. Zombie Apocalypse is actually Ving’s third walk with the walking dead. But, is he strong enough as an actor to carry the weight of a whole film on his shoulders? This will be answered momentarily.

Zombie Apocalypse is your standard zombie film. It follows a group of survivors as they travel through cities trying to find one of the designated “safe zones.” They are, of course, heavily armed and some of them are even wearing Mad Max type outfits. As they continue on their journey to salvation, some people get eaten, some people join the team, and one blonde girl still complains that she is ‘too fragile to fight’ even though she’s been in a zombie infested Hell for the past couple of weeks. Yeah, there’s always that one….

Zombie Apocalypse is being broadcast on The SyFy Channel several times today and tomorrow, so that already gives you insight into the quality of film. Despite reading a review that called it, “The Worst Zombie Film of the Year,” I didn’t actually think it was too bad. It had its fair share of silliness in terms of special effects make up, acting, zombie movements, and combat moves, but that’s what comes with an indie SyFy film. You kind of expect that just by tuning in. The films biggest, weakest point is by far the CGI. Woman slices zombie with sword – insert bad CGI blood splatter. Explosion – insert cheap CGI fire. And oh look! It’s a pack of unrealistic looking CGI tigers! When will these films ever learn?

There are some good points here, though. The film is shot well enough and the plot is decently paced. The acting is ok and the gore is moderate. No nudity, though. I noticed that Zombie Apocalypse borrows a few plot points from Dawn of The Dead (one of Ving’s other films), but being that mainstream zombie films have existed since the 60s, you have to expect some form of duplication by now. At least Zombie Apocalypse doesn’t leave you with the typical zombie cliffhanger. This film has a definite end.

Check your local listings to see the next time Zombie Apocalypse will air (probably tomorrow, at this point), but if you don’t catch it – you won’t be missing anything great. Just an average zombie movie…with lots of CGI… And if you’re still waiting to see if I thought Ving Rhames can carry a movie by himself? The answer is no, but he is still pretty bad ass.
