The average ticket price fell by $0.01 this year (wow!) and the box office in America brought in 9.5 BILLION dollars in 2014. Despite all that, the box office saw a 0.06% drop in ticket sales this year as compared to last year. This could have been avoided, though, if more horror films were released to theaters by big studios! There were only eleven, yes eleven, big budgeted movies that received a wide release in 2014. Technically there were thirteen if you count creature feature Godzilla which made over $200,000,000 and vampire-action thriller Dracula Untold which made $55,991,000.
So, which films did the best this year? The top three are easy if you think about it. Annabelle was the most anticipated horror film going into 2014 due to The Conjuring run-off. The Purge: Anarchy is part of one of the most popular franchises right now. Ouija was 2014’s only #1 horror title. If you want to get technical, though, Annabelle was the most successful because it made back 10x its original budget even after subtracting marketing costs. The second would be Ouija, followed by The Purge: Anarchy.
Here’s the list of The Eleven Highest Grossing Horror Films of 2014.
