New GREMLINS Movie to be a Sequel and Zach Galligan Wants In!

We’ve known since late 2013 that Warner Bros. are interested in rebooting the classic Gremlins franchise. That, however, is all that can be confirmed as rumors swirl about the rumored production. Some reports have stated that original executive producer Steven Spielberg and screenwriter Chris Columbus would return to the hit creature-feature, while other reports have started that Red Eye‘s Carl Ellswort would take over the script-writing duties. Some reports have stated that the new movie will be a remake, while others have stated it will be a new installment in the supposed trilogy. One thing we can also confirm is that Zach Galligan is definitely willing to return as Billy Peltzer.

Gremlins received a fan screening in London earlier this week and Entertainment Weekly confirms the 51-year-old actor as saying, “I swear on my life… I don’t know if I’m in it or not, but I think there is probably a decent chance since I’m one of the few people left standing from the first movie. [The new movie] is not a remake of the first movie in any way, shape, or form. Chris Columbus has come out and said that the first film is very near and dear to his heart and as long as he is alive it will never be remade. So the only thing they will be, and apparently are going to be doing, is something along the lines of like Jurassic World, where it will be 30 years later.”

Galligan concluded his spoiler filled Q&A by stating that the third film would introduce brand new characters while featuring several returning players from the first film, according to ABC News.

As much as I like Zach Galligan, who’s gone on to star in Waxwork, Warlock: The Armageddon and Hatchet III, I have to say it is unlikely that Warner Bros. and those involved with the upcoming movie would trust him with such intricate details about Gremlins III without him being officially attached. More-so, I think these are just hopes and opinions from the man who helped the first two movies rise to their current cult status. I’d also like to conclude by saying I’m not a fan of remakes in place of reboots, so I’d love to see Gremlins III turn out to be a direct sequel to Gremlins II: The New Batch in whatever way works.

Only time will tell!
