What happens when you mix horror and improv? Gorilla Tango Theater hopes to answer that question with it’s exciting new stage show entitled Assault on the Grindhouse: An Interactive Improv Horror Comedy Experience. Assault on the Grindhouse is an improv show like no other because it’s also part movie screening. It isn’t, however, another “Mystery Science Theater” inspired riff-show. Instead, three talented improv performers will be adding another layer to each of the movies being shown.
Each week, for eight weeks, a different classic horror or cult film will be screened. The actors will be creating new scenes based on what is happening on screen. Sometimes they will use the movie as inspiration for a scene. Other times they may interact with the movie itself. They may even interact with you, the audience. The movie will also play without sound so the actors can fully create new scenes with event their own foley sound or music.
It’s part “What’s Up, Tiger Lily?” and part “Rocky Horror Picture Show”, but even if the shadowcast of a midnight screening of Rocky Horror ran off with their own plot of the movie it would be less bizarre than Assault on the Grindhouse. Think of it as a variety show for your favorite cult movies. Featuring films like “Attack of the Giant Leeches and “The Killer Shrews”, the show is for both fans of these types of film as well as serious improv fans. This is not a mean spirited spoof of the genre, it’s a loving and hilarious send up to the glory days of drive-in movies.
Assault on the Grindhouse begins on May 11th at Gorilla Tango Theater located at 1919 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60647. Tickets are $15 and are available at gorillatango.com. The show runs Thursdays at 9:30pm for eight weeks featuring a show based on a different movie each week.
