This film is regarded as a masterpiece of the German Expressionism art movement, and expresses the subjective mental world of the characters depicted in this horror film. Contemporary vampire movies continue to borrow ideas from Nosferatu up to the present day, such as the danger that sunlight presents to vampires. This silent movie was convincing to the extent that some people thought that Max Schreck, the actor who played the role of Nosferatu, actually was a vampire. The parts of the movie which depict the vampire’s castle were filmed in Slovakia. This Kinemacolor film includes a new musical score and newly colorized intertitles.
