I have a soft spot for horror movies centered around cryptozoological creatures. I love living in the current age with technological advancements but I would give anything to live during the drive-in era with all the bigfoot films popping up. Over the years I’ve watched so many fantastic bigfoot flicks and documentaries. Some of them I would regard as some of my favorite films.
However, I’ve also seen some that were a little rough to sit through. Sometime back Wild Eye sent me the 2017 film Bigfoot Blood Trap that they released under their Raw and Extreme label. Thanks Wild Eye for sending this one over.
**Spoiler Alert**The film follows a brother and sister that inherit a strip of land worth a substantial sum from their now deceased piece of shit grandpa. However, the federal government is hot after the land due to an endangered animal living there. Also interested in the land is a cryptozoologist that lost his family to bigfoot who is researching it. He suspects that the creature mates with humans and they are considered the missing link. When they find one they are able to capture it to run studies on. They plan on proving their theory right but first they must have it breed with a human. After kidnapping several women they discover that the beast dislikes tattoos. They soon find the perfect candidate when a god fearing woman going door to door delivery the word in the good book knocks at their home. She is quickly abducted and put in the basement with the beast where they do breed. However, things don’t go as planned and soon the monster and his new love interest have their eyes on escaping. **Spoiler Alert**
Wild Eye’s Raw and Extreme has released several solid no budget horror films that have an eye on the rougher side of the genre. Bigfoot Blood Trap does fit under that moniker but it was, sadly, not one of the releases that I enjoyed. Sure, it was alright for a first time watch with a few fun moments but I doubt I will be revisiting this one anytime soon.
The acting in this one is surprisingly well done. Edward X. Young is no stranger to my reviews nor is this his first Wild Eye release. Some of you may remember the fantastic film Mold! from several years ago. It delivers a superb job in his role and really holds the scenes together. The supporting cast does a decent job as well. They really get into their characters but their inexperience does show at times.
The story for this one is interesting on paper but is a bit of a mess to watch. I like the idea of the cryptid mating with women and how it could be the missing link. The missing link portion is not something new to indie cinema but it works in conjunction to the story. My biggest hang up on the film is how it feels like it could end at any moment. Then, when you think the movie has ran it’s course, we are introduced to yet another female lead and almost the same story is retold. It’s like the lead quit and they were forced to replace her. I honestly don’t know what the issue is but the story just doesn’t flow as smoothly as it should have.
Finally, this film does have some blood but don’t expect top notch effects. The bigfoot in the film is a cheap gorilla costume that looks as if it was not worked on at all. Just a stock costume straight from Spirit. The blood we get is extremely bright red, which I actually enjoy, but the practical effects throughout the film are rather rough. The film definitely shows it’s budget in this aspect. Overall, Bigfoot Blood Trap just didn’t do it for me. Wild Eye has released some amazing no budget bigfoot flicks over the years like Bigfoot vs. Zombies and Bigfoot: The Movie but this one just wasn’t for me.
