Blood Brothers

Blood is thicker than water but, between the DeRushie brothers, most of the blood is fake.

The Belleville natives — Jason and Jeff — have turned their lifelong joy of horror films into a career. The pair have been making in-roads in the film industry under their company’s name, The Brothers Gore FX. In the past three years, the brothers have handled the special effects duties in a half-dozen short films, a number of television programs and, in September, the third feature film they worked on will make its DVD debut.

Older brother Jason, 34, recently returned to his native city after residing in Scarborough where his younger sibling, Jeff, continues to live. Just over three years ago, Jason left his steady, stable job with Black Diamond Cheese to pursue his dream of working in the film industry.

“I gave up 10 years and benefits and $40,000 a year,” he told The Intelligencer, sitting at the dining room table of his West Hill home. “Yeah, I took a huge chance.”

The chance has, so far, paid off for the brothers. Jeff still lives in the GTA to be closer to Toronto’s film industry and the brothers have been travelling to Montreal where they have been working with George Tucci’s Fallen Angel Effects, one of Canada’s larger special effects companies
