What happens when Toronto filmmaker Shauna Jaeger sets out to discover what’s behind the mad-genius of Lloyd Kaufman – president and founder of Troma Entertainment and the creator of The Toxic Avenger? Blood is spilled, skin is torn, pants are dropped and a few breasts are revealed. General madness ensues as Jaeger and her team follow this B-movie legend from Toronto to New York City to Buffalo in an attempt to find out what has pushed this legendary, independent filmmaker to keep making movies, successful or otherwise, for over 30 years.

Several years in the making King Kaufman: The Passion of Lloyd (A Schlock-umentary) features intimate moments with Kaufman, exclusive interviews with writer/director James Gunn (Slither/Dawn of the Dead), actor Jessica Dublin (Troma’s War/Toxie II/III), behind the scenes interviews with the cast and crew of Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead and some really wicked tunes.

“Nearly everyone working in film in America has at some point been inspired by or worked with Kaufman,” says Jaeger. “He is the biggest cheerleader for independent cinema I’ve ever met and is responsible for helping start the careers of many [top actors and writers] including Kevin Costner, Marisa Tomei, Samuel L. Jackson and Trey Parker. This film is more than just a look into the bizarre life of Lloyd Kaufman. It pays homage to his work – hence the term ‘schlock-umentary’. Like our subject, we tried to not take ourselves too seriously and just have fun with it.”

“It’s about time someone made a film about Lloyd Kaufman. He’s one of my favorite directors”, says Kaufman. “Jaeger and her team have produced a superbly Tromatic edumentary. Hope she remembers me when she hits the big time. Hoorah to independent filmmakers!”

The director’s cut world premier of King Kaufman: The Passion of Lloyd (A Schlock-umentary) will screen at the SoCal Independent Film Festival in Huntington Beach, California on September 12, 2008. The festival runs from September 9th-14th.
