Wicked Lake (2008)

REVIEW: Wicked Lake (2008):Reviewed by BRYAN SCHUESSLER

Wicked Lake (2008) had a very promising ad campaign going with that phenomenally intriguing poster for it. It had some very attractive women playing the lead roles and I thought, if nothing else it would be a blood and babes movie. It would sort of be your typical slasher fare and be an average movie. Well, I was wrong. This movie really was terrible. It was extremely boring. It had some of the most annoying characters ever put to film and at times, made no sense whatsoever and left me utterly confused. It had a fair amount of nudity going for it and had some blood, but not enough to make up for all the annoying characters running amok throughout the whole film.

Zach Passero directed Wicked Lake (2008) and I have to say he should focus more on the scripts of his films. The plot was very confusing and the characters were so dull and shallow that one does not even care if they are killed off or not. Passero may have a promising career directing soft-core nudie scenes, but not making horror films. Naked babes go only so far in a horror film. There always needs to be substance to a film, and if one does not have decent blood and guts, characters with depth and decent acting, and a coherent plot- this will make for a horrendous film.

The high-points of the film, if you can call them that, were scenes of nudity. The actresses Carlee Baker (Mary), Eryn Joslyn (Helen), Eve Mauro (Jill), and Robin Sydney (Illene) were the beautiful women that pranced around naked most of the time. I believe Eve Mauro is the woman gracing the boxart for the cover of the film and all the posters. Robin Sydney is the only actress that I recognized as having been in other films (Masters of Horror “Right to Die” (2007), Evil Bong (2006), and The Lost (2005). Al Jourgensen aka Alien Jourgensen of the industrial rock band Ministry made the music for the film, which was pretty good. I did enjoy his soundtrack, but I do enjoy most everything Ministry does.

One has Adam Rockoff and Chris Siverston to thank for the confusing and nonsense-filled plot and script. It was very poorly written and had elements of “artiness” that just made for annoying scenes that made one want to stab needles in one’s eyeballs. Aside from the scenes of gratuitous nudity and a cool soundtrack, this movie just sucked. I had to watch an award-winning documentary immediately after to get the bad aftertaste out of my mouth.

Should I even mention what the plot of the movie is? Four girls go to a cabin and are somehow followed by four men who we have no idea how they knew where the girls were, and are humiliated and made to do slightly nasty things, like clean up vomit and take parts of their clothes off. Then they are picked off in semi-gory murders, but all come back to life. To kill again and open up the door for a !GULP! sequel.

Go rent a porno if you want to see naked girls and sex, do not rent this solely based on the cover art and the cast of beauties. Its crap wrapped up in a nice box. Don’t be fooled.
