Recently premiered by Maniac Films is their first feature film Deadly Detour, a slasher that pays tribute to films like Friday the 13th and other ’80s slashers.
A bunch of friends split up into groups of two via two cars are travelling down south to Florida for a weekend. Thinking they’ll have a trip filled with nothing but fun, sex, booze and drugs, their trip hits a snag when one of the cars breaks down. Having come across a pile of guts near a reststop earlier, it doesn’t seem to stop them on their adventure. As the bunch splits up to look for help and put up a temporary camp site while waiting for help to arrive, a deformed Jason-esque axe-wielding maniac begins hunting the kids down one by one chopping them up in various gory ways. A guy has an arrow put through the back of his head and out his mouth, a woman is stabbed repeatedly in the vagina with a vibrator, a man is grinded up in a car fanbelt, guts are ripped out, and people are dismembered, among other things.
Deadly Detour is pure slasher trash at its finest, filled with white trash characters, sleazy dialogue, offensive humor, creative kills, nudity, sex, and more! Near the end a busload of blind people are hacked up one by one with a machete and in a really sick, envelope-pushing scene, a pregnant blind woman’s stomach is stomped causing the fetus to burst out. Also featured are a couple of unnecessary scenes of a guy defecating in the woods and a shot of a red haired kid’s penis while he’s urinating. Why did we have to see that? Other than that, Deadly Detour is a pure winner from Mike O’Mahony and Maniac Films. There’s John Waters-styled humor, over-the-top gore, an ’80s slasher atmosphere, a high body count and an overall very transgressive style of filmmaking by Mike and the Maniac Films crew which shows a promising start for them as filmmakers aiming for a cult following.
