Cheap Scares

CheapScaresCoversm.jpgFredonia-born author and director Gregory Lamberson combined his two biggest passions for his latest literary project – “Cheap Scares! Low Budget Horror Filmmakers Share Their Secrets.”

This Wednesday, Lamberson, who wrote and directed three low budget horror films himself in the ’80s and ’90s, will launch a new filmmaking book at Talking Leaves Books in Buffalo with the only area book signing from 7 to 9 p.m. “Cheap Scares!” – available now through McFarland & Company, a leading U.S. publisher of scholarly, reference and academic books – represents Lamberson’s third published work following the release of “Johnny Gruesome” in October, and a genre departure from his previous two novels.

“Although the book is aimed at aspiring horror filmmakers, the lessons in it are applicable to any independent feature,” Lamberson said.

“There’s an emphasis on storytelling and marketing, two areas where many low budget filmmakers are deficient. I laid my own successes and failures out there for everyone to see, and all of my interview subjects were very candid as well. We all wanted to be part of a book that would actually help filmmakers and entertain other readers as well.”

“Cheap Scares!” – nearly a year and a half in the making and over 99,000 words for the reading – includes 92 rare, behind-the-scenes photographs, sample screenplay and budget pages, and details the process of making a low budget, independent film from screenwriting through production, post-production, distribution and marketing.
