SPRINGFIELD — What they lacked in budgets, the horror flicks of the ’70s and ’80s always seemed to compensate with outlandish claims. “Banned in 28 countries!”
“The movie they wouldn’t let you see in Luxembourg until now!”
“Makes ‘Faces of Death’ look like Snow White!”
While only 24, Justin Russell is proving himself to be an adept student of the exploitative horror-trash classics of the past. For the premiere of his first feature film last month, the young director — a 2003 Northwestern High grad — had vomit bags printed up that declared, “Banned in 47 countries!”
Never mind that “Death Stop Holocaust” so far hasn’t been seen outside of Cleveland Heights.
Two screenings there in July provided a good dose of encouragement.
“Where there were jumps, they jumped,” Russell said. “I heard the right things I wanted to hear.”
