The Anniversary at Shallow Creek
Review By Sharon Foss
Attention romantics! What will you do for love? Will you do something special on your anniversary? You will after The Anniversary at Shallow Creek!
Medical students Sam and Paige want a romantic getaway, so they plan a weekend at Sam’s uncle’s cabin. A few friends decide to tag along for a weekend of fun, drinking and overall partying. Unfortunately for them, this cabin has a recent history of violence. A year earlier, two young and in-love people headed for a night out only to be murdered at the front door. And unfortunately for Sam, Paige and their friends, it is said a few times during the set up of the movie that, “no one can hear us for miles.” That is never a good thing, sweet youngsters.
This is The Anniversary at Shallow Creek, brought to us by Breaking Glass Pictures and director by Jon D. Wagner. Writers, producers, and actors Eric Fischer and Brianna Lee Johnson star in this film. Fischer is a former Chicago White Sox player; Johnson is his wife.
Although I, as a viewer, can understand that this cabin was the scene of a horrific double murder, what I am not able to grasp is why the nephew of the owner was not told this before heading into the cabin of doom. Am I supposed to believe that a year ago after the double murder, Sam’s uncle neglects to mention what happened at his house when he hands over the keys? Apparently!

As the group just begins to enjoy their weekend at the cabin of death, all hell breaks loose. The sniper, who is the same person who killed the two people a year prior, is back, and he or she lets loose a few bullets during the campfire. Hm…isn’t Sam’s uncle a former war sniper?
The first hour of the movie is to be expected, from the set up of a group of friends wanting a fun weekend away to arriving at the cabin only to discover the hell they will
(possibly) live through. But, as with every movie of the horror genre worth its weight, there is a twist. Only Paige and Sam, as medical students, can truly understand what is about to happen. Is the twist worth it? I’m not telling!
The movie itself is like many others—entertaining, interesting and worth watching. I can’t say it’s anything out of the ordinary or new, but that doesn’t make it bad. The movie claims to be inspired by true events, which I believe is a statement that should not be allowed unless there are true, factual accounts that are similar. Remember, “based on true events” and “inspired by true events” are two separate animals, so I’d love to see what this is allegedly inspired by.
The Anniversary at Shallow Creek also stars Brick Patrick, Katharine Brandt, Annie Burgstede, Anthony Campanello, and others. The DVD also includes a behind-the-scenes special, as well as interviews and commentary.
